Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects the way an individual relates to their environment and the way they interact with others. It can present in many different ways and this is why the word spectrum is a good way to describe it.
Autism is known to affect three main areas, social skills, communication and patterns in behaviour. Children on the autism spectrum will have varying differences in these areas, they may experience difficulties with behaviour, communication, social and play skills and emotional and sensory regulation.
Communication difficulties are common in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Speech Pathologists can play an important role in the assessment and intervention process and supporting and providing strategies to the child’s family, educators and other therapists.
